As the π electrons of the phenyl group can interact with the aromatic ring of an analyte, Phenyl columns provide unique selectivity to aromatic compound compared to aliphatic straight chain reversed phases of ODS, C8 and C4. Phenyl also has application as an alternative to ODS and C4, for the analysis of peptides and proteins.
